Located in Madison, Wisconsin, Level was engaged to support two distinct components of this project: first, to reimagine the home’s existing multi-tier exterior deck and outdoor entertaining area, and second, to renovate the shared second-floor bathroom of a young family’s home. Like many families living in older houses, they loved their neighborhood and the character of their home, but the existing layouts—both inside and out—no longer supported the way they lived.
For the exterior, the clients were seeking a single-level outdoor space that offered greater flexibility and improved day-to-day functionality. The original decks and hardscaping will be removed and replaced with a larger, more usable environment designed for family life and entertaining. While the home’s architecture is classic, the clients requested a more modern outdoor aesthetic as a purposeful juxtaposition to the traditional exterior. The resulting design offers a clean, modern outdoor experience—with integrated sun and shade elements, thoughtful privacy screening, and intentional spatial planning—well suited to their corner lot and the vibrancy of the surrounding neighborhood.
Inside, we transformed the second-floor bathroom by expanding the footprint and borrowing space from an adjacent walk-in closet. This allowed for a more comfortable and efficient layout for the family’s daily routines. Every selection—from plumbing fixtures to finishes and lighting—was chosen to honor the home’s original era while delivering a timeless, refreshed aesthetic.
Additionally, we designed a bespoke custom wardrobe for the primary bedroom to replace the closet space reallocated to the bathroom. The goal was for this piece to feel original to the room—integrated, intentional, and true to the home’s character—while meeting the clients’ specific storage needs. In older homes, space planning often requires creativity and thoughtful customization to support modern living. This wardrobe is a perfect example of how tailored solutions can seamlessly bridge historic charm with modern functionality.
